What is Fathom Five?
Fathom Five is a conservative publication of current affairs, history, geopolitics, philosophy, book recommendations and reviews, and much else. I have written on subjects as diverse as Homer and Tolkien, George Orwell, Donald Trump, the war in Ukraine, Marxism, and the Enlightenment.
The Fathom Five mission is to offer high-quality, well-researched essays that are rich in analytical depth, clear, and which contest the ideological dominance of the political left in the modern West. I hope to draw upon the very best of the Western tradition to help inspire, educate and rebuild.
Who am I?
I am 34 years old, and graduated in Philosophy from The University of Edinburgh in 2012. I am an avid reader of history (and military history), theology, philosophy, classic literature, and the great essayists. Although I have a busy job, I aim to write as often as I can. I spend much of my spare time reading, and listening to, the important voices of the past and the modern age.
I have been published recently in The Conservative Woman and The Daily Sceptic. I also contributed to an Australian collection of essays on the Western political tradition (Culture of Freedom, 2024).
Why should you subscribe?
If you subscribe, you will receive my work — for free — directly into your email inbox, to be read at your convenience. You can unsubscribe easily at any time (although almost nobody has so far). I aim, in time, to offer readers the option to pay for some of my work.
If you also follow Fathom Five on the Substack app, then you will be able to read my Notes, which are short-form thoughts, critiques and book recommendations. I aim shortly to add additional features, such as reading out my essays so that they can be enjoyed in audio form.
If you appreciate my work, please do share it with your friends and family. I have been greatly encouraged by the growing readership I have accrued so far, having started from nothing but a blank Substack account.
I am immensely grateful. Thank you for your support.
